We showed up at a local park the first Saturday after the mass shooting at the July 4th parade in Highland Park, Illinois, ready to work with whoever showed up. We put the word out, originally naming the project: “July 4th Tragedy: Help and Healing in the Park.” The group is continuing to meet on Saturdays more than a year later.
The participants spoke with a deep level of courage, saying the difficult things, and were met with compassion, not just from the therapists but from each other. We hope that this program has brought some measure of healing to this traumatized community, and that the participants were able to talk more courageously in their families, classrooms, businesses, and peer groups because of their experiences talking together.
